Preserve America Community |
 |
On January 25, 2008,
First Lady Laura Bush
designated Cape
Girardeau as one of
the newest Preserve
America Communities.
Preserve America
is a White House initiative
developed in
cooperation with the
Advisory Council on
Historic Preservation
(ACHP) and the U.S.
Departments of the
Interior, Agriculture,
and other agencies.
This program
recognizes and
designates communities
that protect and celebrate their
heritage, use their
historic assets for
economic development and community
revitalization, and
encourage people to
experience and
appreciate local
historic resources
through education and
heritage tourism
programs.

Why shop Main Street??? |
|
Attentive customer
service, their unique
merchandise, and the
special atmosphere of
their stores, as
opposed to the
cookie-cutter retail
chains that all seem
to sell the same
thing.
Shopping on Main
Street means finding
merchandise that is
infused with local
heritage and can’t be
found anywhere else.
It’s about making a
connection. It’s also
about keeping the
entrepreneurial spirit
alive and helping
local businesses
compete against Big
Box retailers and
other large retail
institutions.

Are YOU
a piece of the puzzle? |
|
Old
Town Cape is often recognized (and judged) by our
events. And the Board of Directors and volunteers are
all extremely proud
of these events. But these events are just a piece of
the puzzle.
The
Old Town Cape District includes 130 blocks, more than
300 businesses and more than 9,000 residents. We
work in many ways to make the Old Town Cape District a
better place to do business, own property, and to live
work and play.

Cape
Girardeau, a DREAM Community |
|
This fall, Governor Matt Blunt
awarded the City of Cape Girardeau the honor and
designation of one of ten inaugural DREAM communities in
the State of Missouri. As a DREAM community, we are
working with the State of Missouri and Peckham Guyton
Albers & Viets, Inc. (PGAV), an urban planning firm, to
help shape the future redevelopment and growth of our
historic downtown.

DREAM Initiative. |
