Old Town Cape is
often recognized by our events. And the Board of
Directors and volunteers are all extremely proud of these
events. But these events are just a piece of the puzzle.
The Old Town Cape
District includes 130 blocks, more than 300 businesses and
more than 9,000 residents. We work in many ways to make
the Old Town Cape District a better place to do business,
own property, and to live, work, and play.
- We are an
economic development organization. Over 66 million
dollars was reinvested in the Old Town Cape District
during 2007.
- We work on
economic development through historic preservation,
encouraging, business owners, current and potential
property owners to preserve our unique history and
heritage. Lang Jewelers and the William Henry Harrison
House are good examples!
- We work to
bring new business to the District by encouraging and
assisting potential business and property owners. A net
gain of 23 new businesses opened or relocated to the
District during 2007.
- We work to
improve the physical environment of downtown, finding
ways and money to streetscape, adding more historical
lighting, benches, trash cans, landscaping, banners and
Christmas decorations. In addition, Old Town Cape
spends over $6,000 each year for downtown clean up.
- We encourage
partnerships that allow projects to be completed. DREAM
is a partnership between Old Town Cape, the Chamber and
the City of Cape Girardeau. Historical lighting around
Old St. Vincent's was accomplished through a partnership
with the City, local businesses, banks and Old Town
Cape.
- We promote
downtown in general through media and other outlets such
as a billboard, website and more!
- We work to
locate grants or partnership opportunities that would
benefit the District. Again, DREAM and the additional
historical lighting are great examples.
As you can see,
there are many pieces to this puzzle and though some of
the work of Old Town Cape is more visible than others, all
the pieces are important.
You might just be the missing
piece of the Old Town Cape puzzle!

Our Committees
Promotions -
Selling the image of downtown by marketing the unique
characteristics of downtown to shoppers, investors,
new businesses and visitors. Our strategy; a positive
image through advertising, retail promotion activity,
special events and marketing campaigns carried out by
committee and other volunteers.
Design - Works to
encourage appropriate aesthetics in the downtown; e.g.
appropriate building rehabs, and in fill design;
downtown cleanliness. Capitalizing on downtown assets-
such as historic buildings. Creating an inviting
atmosphere through window displays, parking areas,
signs, sidewalks, streetlights, and landscaping.
Economic Restructuring
- Works to identify new market opportunities for the
downtown, find new uses for historic commercial
buildings, and stimulate investment in property. Also
assisting with business expansion and recruitment.
Organization -
Getting everyone working toward the same goal.
Building consensus and cooperation among the groups
that have an important stake in the district. Works
to recruit volunteers, gives input on organizational
structure and helps to build strong committees.
